What are the types of sewerage system

There are several types of sewerage systems:

Combined sewer systems: These systems transport both stormwater runoff and sewage in the same pipes. During dry weather, the sewage is treated at a wastewater treatment plant. However, during periods of heavy rainfall, the volume of stormwater runoff can exceed the capacity of the treatment plant, leading to the release of untreated sewage into the environment.

  1. Sanitary sewer systems: These systems transport only sewage from homes and businesses to a wastewater treatment plant.

  2. Separate stormwater sewer systems: These systems transport only stormwater runoff and do not handle sewage. The water is typically conveyed to a natural waterbody or retention pond.

  3. Greywater systems: These systems recycle water from sinks, showers, and washing machines for non-potable (non-drinking) uses such as irrigation or toilet flushing.

  4. On-site wastewater treatment systems: These systems treat and dispose of sewage on the property where it is generated, rather than transporting it to a central treatment facility. These systems are commonly used in rural areas or in situations where a connection to a central sewer system is not practical.
